Mixed Faces

Want to create a unique portrait using just magazine cut-outs?

In this DIY collage art tutorial, I mix and match different facial features from magazine images to craft an entirely new face!

Watch as I tear, arrange, and layer cut paper to form a striking and unexpected portrait. This is a fun and easy paper collage project for anyone looking to experiment with creative cut-and-paste art.

Perfect for: Mixed media artists, collage beginners, and creative journalers

Materials

  • Magazines
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Sketchbook or paper

Instructions

  • Find elements that catch your eye in a magazine and cut them out
  • Find facial features that go together. I don't mean same gender, same skin color, or same age, but facing in the same direction. A front-facing nose looks weird in a 3/4 facing portrait.
  • Start assembling the portrait
  • If you like to have a background to go with the images, this would be the moment to make one. It's harder to create a background when the portrait is already glued to the page. That's what usually happens to me ;)
  • Glue your portrait to the page
  • Add some extra embellishments and text to finish up the page.
